What this means
CMS publishes a 1–5 star "Overall Hospital Quality Rating" for each Medicare-participating hospital based on five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely & effective care. About 13% of hospitals nationally earn 5 stars; the average is closer to 3 stars. Ratings update yearly each summer.
What you can do
- For scheduled care, compare 3 nearby hospitals at https://www.medicare.gov/care-compare/
- Look at the procedure-specific data — a hospital can be 5-star overall but average for, say, heart surgery.
- For emergencies: go to the nearest ER. Star ratings don't change a stabilize-and-transfer decision.
- After a hospital stay, request your discharge summary and lab results in writing for your primary care doctor.
